NINA SIMONE
Nina — Fine Art Print After the original oil on canvas
Against a field of saturated gold, Nina Simone looks straight out at you — unsmiling, unbothered, entirely in command. Her crown of natural hair fills the upper half of the canvas like a halo. The background is covered in handwritten notation and titles from across her catalog: "Mississippi Goddam," "Four Women," "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," "Wild Is the Wind," "Sinner Man," alongside staves, clefs, and scattered notes, as if the songs are still coming to her in real time.
The portrait renders her with unflinching detail ; the set of her jaw, the weight behind the eyes, the fine texture of skin and lash, while the surrounding scrawl keeps the whole surface alive and moving. It's a study in two registers at once: the stillness of the woman and the noise of everything she carried and made.
A tribute to the High Priestess of Soul as artist, activist, and unapologetic self.
Why matte
Matte paper was chosen deliberately for this piece. The original oil carries enormous tonal depth, in the warm modeling of the skin, in the near-black of the hair and shoulders, in the range of the gold. A glossy stock would flatten those golds under glare and put a shine across the darkest areas, where most of the detail lives. Matte holds the depth and lets you read the surface from any angle, in any light.
