“Vanity Upon Vanity” — graphite/charcoal on paper, hyperrealist portrait study

30 x 40

Drawing its title from Ecclesiastes, this piece confronts the viewer with an unguarded meditation on impermanence. The subject’s face, weathered, lined, and rendered in exhaustive detail fills the entire frame, leaving no room for distraction from the truth it carries: that all flesh, however vital it once was, is subject to time. The eyes, heavy-lidded yet alert, seem to hold both resignation and quiet defiance against that inevitability, transforming a simple portrait into a meditation on mortality, vanity, and the fleeting nature of the self.

Executed in meticulous cross-hatching and fine linework, the work treats every crease and fold as evidence a record of years accumulated rather than erased. The tight cropping and absence of background strip away all context, refusing the comfort of narrative and forcing a direct reckoning with the face itself. The monochrome palette reinforces this austerity, reducing the image to pure form, light, and the unadorned dignity of age.

This is a one-of-one original piece, executed with archival-quality materials and designed to stand as a statement work in any space.
